Why do volcanoes erupt?
answer:
When rock inside the Earth becomes hot enough it melts.
This molten rock, or magma, is less dense than the surrounding
solid rock. Just as an object that is less dense than water will float
on water, the relatively low density of the magma cause it to rise
to the surface of the Earth.
If the magma contains waqter and dissolved gases, when the magma
reaches the surface the water and dissolved gases will suddenly expand
into steam and gas, causing a violent eruption.
(Example: This is like shaking a can of coke and then popping the tab.)

Derick: I am really stumped on this question. I don’t know the different types of eruptions. Linda- Jean please tell me the answer.
Linda-Jean: The different types of eruptions are Hawaiian, Strombolian, Plinian, Vulcanian, Icelandic and Pelean.
Mi young: Hey Nikhil! Do you know how volcanoes form?
Nikhil: Yeah! When magma comes out of the ground suddenly it hardens and piles up like a small mountain. After some years this pile grows to become a volcano. This is the process of how volcanoes form.
Mi Young: Wow so fascinating!
Nikhil: Derick can you tell me the difference between lava and magma?
Derick: Sure why not! The difference is that magma is molten rock beneath the surface as where as lava is molten rock that has erupted on the surface.
Linda-Jean: Nikhil can you tell me why volcanoes don’t form near cities?
Nikhil: Volcanoes need space to form and if they did form near cities people would go screaming from here to there like this: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh every time the volcano erupts.
Linda-Jean: So that's why volcanoes don't form near cities.
Derick: Hey! Mi Young please answer my question. Which is the most active volcano on Earth?
Mi Young: The most active volcano on Earth is Mt. Etna in Italy. It has been erupting for 3,500 years.
Derick: Ooooooooooooooooh!
Nikhil: Um Derick I need to ask you something. Do earthquakes occur below the volcano before it erupts? Huh Huh Huh Huhhhhhhhhhhhhh?
Derick: O.k? Earthquakes do occur below the volcano before it erupts.
Mi Young: Do you know which was the largest volcano eruption in History?
Linda-Jean: The largest volcano eruption in history was the eruption of the volcano Tambora. It blasted volcanic bombs 100 Km away.
Derick: Nikhil, can you tell me where and when the last volcano erupted?
Nikhil: The last volcano erupted in Rabaul, New Zealand last year.
Mi Young: Are there any volcanoes that have similarities between them for elevation?
Derick: Yes there are volcanoes that have similarities between them for elevation. For example Mt. Fuji in Japan and Mt. Ararat in Turkey.
Derick: Do you know how far anyone has gone in an extinct volcano crater?
Mi Young: The farthest that anyone has gone inside a volcano is only 5000 ft.
Nikhil: What kinds of islands have underwater volcanoes made?
Derick: The major ones are Japan,New Zealand,the Caribbean Islands,the Philippines, Indonesia,and the Aleutian Islands.
